Here and Now Canceled at HBO After One Season

There's no future for Here and Now at HBO.

The premium cable network has swung the ax on the series after just one season, Deadline reports.

“After careful consideration we have decided not to move forward with a second season of Here and Now,” HBO said in a statement.

“We thank Alan for his dedication to innovative storytelling, and we look forward to his next endeavor.”

The series followed A multi-racial family that consisted of a husband, a wife, three adopted children from Somalia, Vietnam and Colombia and one biological child, who found their bonds tested when one of the children begins seeing things which the rest cannot.

HBO described the series as "a provocative and darkly comic meditation on the disparate forces polarizing present-day American culture, as experienced by the members of a progressive multi-ethnic family – a philosophy professor and his wife, their adopted children from Vietnam, Liberia and Colombia, and their sole biological child – and a contemporary Muslim family, headed by a psychiatrist who is treating one of their children."

The series came from Alan Ball, who previously created megahits Six Feet Under and True Blood for the network.

It starred Tim Robbins, Holly Hunter, Jerrika Hinton, Daniel Zovatto, Raymond Lee, Sosie Bacon, Andy Bean, Joe Williamson and Peter Macdissi.

The cancellation news is unsurprising when you consider the fact the series went largely ignored by both critics and viewers.

On Rotten Tomatoes, it had just a 24 percent approval rating based on 41 reviews. HBO prides itself on having shows that receive critical acclaim, so Here and Now was at a disadvantage before it even debuted.

Here and Now Season 1 averaged just 0.4 million viewers and a 0.1 rating on Sunday nights for the initial airing of the episodes.
