30 Rock Review: Abort Operation Righteous Cowboy Lightning!

at .

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.  I have been giving 30 Rock a hard time as of late, but "Operation Righteous Cowboy Lightning" did everything I could ask of an episode, and then some.

We got laughs from a variety of characters, there were a couple of great guest stars on hand and they even got me choked up for a mere moment.

Comforting Jenna

While Tracy Jordan was as crazy as ever this week, he was so logical in his ridiculous behavior that it was almost more funny than usual.  Acting nice in front of his wife's reality show cameras was both a smart move if he wants to win that Oscar, and was hilarious to watch as he agreed to do more and more helpful things for Liz.

While Liz was dealing with her Tracy disaster, Jack was trying to create a horrible disaster out of thin air.  I loved his idea of having a relief special ready the day it hits, and I loved the general idea of having things on TV when the other networks don't.  Why doesn't NBC take advantage of this more often?  Wouldn't they benefit from airing new episodes when CBS and ABC take the night off?

That's neither here nor there, but Jack's preemptive disaster relief show was good for plenty of laughs, as he got Robert DeNiro to read off every type of disaster you could think of in front of the camera.  When this screen legend started talking about super intelligent sharks, I wished that Jonathan was sitting next to me so I could have given him a double high five.

The only story that didn't work for me this week involved the writers' room.  It started out well, but as soon as it became mostly about Lutz, I lost interest. Lutz is the worst.

And finally we got to Tracy and Liz's fake moment of resolution on Angie's reality show.  Like Lemon said, "I know it's fake," but I couldn't help but get a bit choked up while fauk Liz and fake Tracy hugged it out.  I mean, it's hard not to when One Republic's "Secrets" is playing in the background.  And when they brought it back in during Liz and Jack's showdown, I laughed as hard as ever.  Great stuff.

Other notes:

  • Dennis Duffy!  I will chuckle every time he calls Liz Lemon "dummy."
  • Tracy's real name is Unclaimed Baby Boy.  His middle name is Perfection.
  • Tracy let us know that every crazy A-Lister has an island: Nicolas Cage, Celine Dion, Charles Widmore.  Did he slip that last one by you?  Not if you watch Lost he didn't.
  • Like Jack, I did not want to hear Liz explain a snart, let alone perform one.
  • As always, we've updated our section of 30 Rock quotes with the latest one-liners.

Every crazy a-lister owns an island; Nicolas Cage, Celine Dion, Charles Widmore. This is a whole new world in front of me, LL.

It doesn't matter how long you live in New York, it's still fun to look up and pretend all the buildings are giant, severed, robot penises.
