After the Chief (for some reason) told Meredith that Derek was planning to propose, she confronted the downtrodden McDreamy about it during his drunken meltdown.

His response, naturally, was to say cruel stuff and belt Mer's engagement ring into the woods with a baseball bat - an impressive feat given his level of intoxication at the time.
